This is a two and a half hour class with Master Beekeeper, Dann Purvis on the subject of splitting bee colonies, commonly known as "increase".

Every beekeeper needs to know how to perform this essential skill to manage their bee colonies.  Beekeepers perform splits for various reasons:

  • increase beehive numbers
  • save money
  • reduce swarming
  • requeening hives

Late spring is one of the most common times for creating hive splits. It is a natural time of increase for honey bee colonies.  For the beekeeper with a strong, growing honey bee colony, splitting a hive to prevent swarming makes senseEssentially, you are splitting a hive before they split themselves.  Spring is the optimum time for making a hive split. It is a time of rapid growth for the honey bee colony. When done properly, both “halves” of the colony will grow into productive beehives.

Dann will walk students through the various methods of splitting hives.

About your instructor:  Dann Purvis, Jr. Seeing the plight of the honeybee, Dann Purvis decided to enter into the field of honeybee breeding and research. Soon after, they formed the company “Purvis Brothers Apiaries, Inc.” named after their 4 sons. This rapidly turned into a breeding project with a fully functional breeding and disease analysis lab. A line of bees known as the Purvis Goldline honeybee soon emerged. The family grew the business to 1,000 hives of bees and 1,800 mating nucs. PBA produced 20 barrels of Sourwood honey, 10,000 queen honeybees per year with wax and pollen as by-products, at it’s peak. Their main products were research and the Purvis Goldline Queen Honeybee which was famous for its ability to survive without the use of chemicals. Because of its gentleness and productivity, it was considered by many to be “the best bees a beekeeper could keep”. This is the only honeybee to date that was ever to receive a patent status.  The bee was so respected, researchers from across the country were openly and secretly acquiring his stock to add to their gene pool as well as other breeders. As one of the very few Artificial Inseminators of Queen Honeybees, Dann used this technique to collect a large diverse gene pool, known as a “closed population breeding group”, into what he called his “tool box”.Dann has been active in teaching at the local, National and International levels. He has been asked to speak with members of Congress, Senate and “just about every politician from dog catcher all the way to President’s men” concerning bees and their survival. Dann has published numerous articles concerning the keeping, breeding and the survival of honeybees in several periodicals to include the industry standards American Bee Journal and Bee Culture Magazine. Dann has appeared on local and national media events and is considered as a bee authority. Considered as an “creative innovator” by many and a rabble-rouser by some, Dann is on the forefront of what is happening in beekeeping and modern farming today.

Leonard and Dolly Rickerman, Proprietors have been keeping bees on the Front Range for well over a decade.  A family business, we have several bee yards that we run for honey production, pollination services, nuc production, and queen rearing.   Rocky Mountain Bee Supply is dedicated to the success of hobbyist beekeepers and the passion for beekeeping by teaching best beekeeping practices.  Our learning never stops.
