Usage Instructions for Oxalic Acid Treatment

To effectively manage Varroa mites, oxalic acid applied must be used with a vaporizer or as a dribble. For tablet application, per the label, use two 1-gram tablet per brood box in the vaporizer—no measuring is required. For powder use, measure 2 grams of oxalic acid powder per brood chamber. Apply heat according to the vaporizer manufacturer’s instructions until all oxalic acid has sublimated. Always wear protective gear and apply treatments in well-ventilated outdoor areas.

Winter Treatments: A Must for Healthy Hives

As the colder months settle in, it’s crucial to ensure your bees are properly treated for varroa mites. Did you know that treating during lower brood periods results in more effective mite control? This is because fewer mites are protected under wax cappings, leaving them vulnerable to treatment.

While oxalic acid vapor (OA) works at any temperature, we generally recommend targeting one of those rare 50°F winter days. In Colorado, January and February often deliver a couple of these mild days amidst freezing temperatures. Slightly warmer air temps encourage bees to break cluster and move about the hive, increasing the treatment's effectiveness.
